Remote Work and Global Collaboration – An Interview

This interview Adnan and I talk about the challenges in the current situation with COVID-19. Companies are forced into enabling remote work at a pace they cannot control efficiently. At the same time, the fast-rising numbers of users utilizing collaboration tools put additional load on company networks that those were never planned for. IT departments are required to deliver the same high-quality standard for remote workers as for the on-premises workforce.

Adnan Rafique is a Collaboration Architect for Microsoft Exchange and Office 365. He is a subject matter expert in this area since the days of Exchange Server 2007.
He reached out to me to record an interview on Office 365, the impact of cloud technologies to the daily operations of IT administrators, and the requirement for life-long learning.
What is the Get-MailboxServerRedundancy cmdlet all about?

Exchange Server 2016 introduced the PowerShell cmdlet Get-MailboxServerRedundancy. This cmdlet helps you plan and prepare for Exchange Server maintenance by querying the current maintenance readiness of the database availability group (DAG).
Interestingly, there is no PowerShell help available for this important cmdlet. Neither Microsoft Docs or The Exchange Management Shell provide information.
Create Exchange Organization Report in Microsoft Word

This script reads Exchange Organization data and creates a single Microsoft Word document. A later version will support exporting to an Html file.
The script requires an Exchange Management Shell for Exchange Server 2016 or newer. Older EMS versions are not tested.

Notes from the Field – Free and Busy without federation Gateway

If you want to share free and busy details between two exchange organizations normally, you will use the Microsoft Federation Gateway. Sometimes this is not possible like for compliance reasons or other business reasons. But there exists a way to do this, even without an Active Directory trust between two organizations.

Deactivate Offline Address Book Download

When you configure an Outlook profile to use Cached Mode the client software uses a special address book to resolve email addresses and other information. This address book is named Offline Address Book (OAB) and is built and provided by the Exchange Organisation hosting the mailbox. The client downloads OAB changes when Outlook starts and a checks for further OAB changes in intervals.
Set-ReceiveConnectorIpAddress script updated – V1.3

The Exchange PowerShell script (Set-ReceiveConnectorIpAddress) to add or remove remote IP address ranges to/from Exchange Server 2013+ receive connectors received an update.
